Mentoring at HDC a perfect match for recent grad

New dental school graduates, like most other new grads, are still eager to learn when they first enter the “real world.” Recognizing this, Heartland Dental Care supports continuing education and mentoring for young dentists. Dr. Robert Kolts, who recently joined Dr. Brice Arndt at Camp Hill Dentist in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, is now experiencing the benefits of these opportunities firsthand.

"Working with such a great mentor like Dr. Arndt has been extremely beneficial. I've learned so much from him in areas such as implants, impacted wisdom teeth and more; it's been like completing a general practice residency but with a full-time dentist’s salary," said Dr. Kolts.

"Being paired with an experienced mentor who's excited to share his knowledge has been one of the best aspects of being supported by Heartland Dental Care. I've noticed that's a common thread at HDC. There are so many smart, gifted dentists who want to help and teach others."

Dr. Kolts was exposed to the healthcare industry early on. Accompanying his father, now a retired general surgeon, on patient rounds, he quickly became interested in working in the field. Because his father was constantly on call, Dr. Kolts knew he wanted a healthcare career that also allowed for a balanced home life. Dentistry became an ideal combination between the two. In 2012, he graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

"During dental school, I thought about what I was looking for in my career, and became aware that I was lacking business knowledge and preparation. I began looking for opportunities that would both fit my career desires and help me build my clinical and business skills," said Dr. Kolts. "What stood out about Heartland Dental Care compared to some other dental service organizations I had considered was that they encourage and support affiliated dentists to take initiative and make a difference. It's provided me the opportunity to grow as a leader and a clinician."

Shortly after graduating, Dr. Kolts became part of the HDC family and started practicing at Camp Hill Dentist.

"Affiliating with HDC has exceeded my expectations. Starting out, I expected to work five or more days a week and be swamped with student loan payments. Instead, I have a flexible schedule and my starting income surpassed what I had anticipated," explained Dr. Kolts. "I was also really happy with the recruiting experience; they made sure I was familiar and comfortable with the office and HDC. Before becoming a part of HDC, I had the opportunity to visit Camp Hill Dentist to meet Dr. Arndt and the team, as well as travel to Effingham, Illinois, to visit the HDC Home Office. During the process, the recruiting team was very clear, responsive and accommodating." Now with HDC for a year, Dr. Kolts is enjoying the perks of a balanced family life and a successful career in dentistry. He's also receiving education and mentoring needed to advance his skills and help him become the clinician he’s always wanted to be.

"I'm now working an ideal schedule that best fits my personal life. I have friends in medical residencies working 60 to 80 hours a week now saying they wished they had gone to dental school instead," said Dr. Kolts. "Thanks to educational courses such as the Doctor Leadership series, I’ve learned things I never learned in school, including leading my team and the business side of dentistry. Not only can I learn from Dr. Arndt in my office, I can reach a network of other experienced dentists if I need assistance simply by sending an email."
