BEING ABLE to offer my patients a more comfortable dental visit is priceless,” said Dr. Anna Singh, Clinical Director at Heartland Dental Care and full-time practicing dentist at her Antioch, Tennessee, office. “Words can’t express what sedation dentistry has done for my practice. I’m finally able to treat patients whose dental fear previously stood in the way of them accepting treatment.”

"I’m lucky to work for a company who believes in the value of continuing education and offering what’s best in patient care."

Anna Singh, DMD

Dr. Singh is one of 14 Heartland doctors who recently completed an intensive course in intravenous conscious sedation. These courses are offered at accredited universities and are designed to prepare the dentist to incorporate IV conscious sedation into their dental practices. “It was an intense program filled with 60 hours of classroom training and 20 patient cases,” explained Dr. Singh. “I’m lucky to work for a company who believes in the value of continuing education and offering what’s best in patient care.”

Heartland’s affiliation with the university IV sedation courses and ability to ensure doctor coverage at each office while the doctor is attending training is just another added perk of being a dentist at Heartland.

The Heartland dentists who received IV sedation certification had to:

  • Complete approximately 60 hours in the classroom
  • Demonstrate competency by passing tests in sedation pharmacology and techniques
  • Demonstrate clinical competency
  • Demonstrate airway management and emergency management
  • Complete aprroximately 57 hours of clinical rotations
  • Comply with other state-specific sedation requirements, such as facility compliance and additional testing

“Before affiliating with Heartland, I wanted to obtain IV sedation certification. However, the financial investment and time out of the office were too overwhelming as a solo practitioner.

Now that I’m a part of Heartland, I was able to complete the courses and know that my patients were well cared for in my absence. It has been an amazing experience,” reasoned Dr. James Fetsch, Clinical Director at Heartland Dental Care and full-time practicing dentist at his O’Fallon, Missouri, office.

Offering IV sedation in Heartland practices is just one more way Heartland can offer patients the care they want and need. “It’s important to me to make sure every patient has access to safe, comfortable, anxiety-free dental care. Becoming IV sedation certified creates a win-win for each dentist and their patients,” explained Dr. Singh. “The courses trained me in all the pertinent medical, pharmacological and psychological issues that make sedation dentistry so appealing to dental avoiders.”

“Receiving IV sedation certification is not an undertaking for the weak,” laughed Dr. Fetsch. “It takes a lot of dedication and requires many hours outside of the dental office to receive certification.”

In addition to the training provided by the university, Heartland also offered a two-day training class for the entire office team. “It’s important that the entire team, not just the dentist, understand the protocols for sedation dentistry. The Heartland sedation training provides job-specific training for each dental team position— Business Assistant, Dental Assistant, Office Manager, etc.,” said Dr. Fetsch.

“We could have just accepted that some patients won’t be able to overcome their fear of dentistry to receive the necessary oral care they desperately need. But that’s a relative way of thinking and at Heartland, everything we do is at the mastery level,” said Dr. Fetsch. “IV sedation certification has given our dentists the training and tools necessary to provide a solution to this ever-growing segment of patients.”
