The physics behind the fusion of dentistry’s driving forces.
Heartland Dental Care, the leader in dental practice management, is excited about the recent affiliation of Bruce Baird, DDS, and Jeffrey Buske, DDS.
When Dr. Bruce Baird considered Heartland Dental Care for the first time seven years ago, he knew something was different. “I flew out to Effingham and was impressed right away when I met Dr. Workman and saw Heartland at work,” he remembered. However, he didn’t immediately take the plunge. Instead, Dr. Baird directed his energies to opening a new business, the Productive Dentist Academy. In addition, Dr. Baird maintained his cosmetic and family dentistry practice, Granbury Dental Center, located outside of Ft. Worth, Texas, while growing his new business venture.
A 1980 graduate of University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio, Dr. Baird spent four years in the army before opening his practice. Dr. Baird quickly established himself as a pioneer in developing and educating the dental world on breakthrough advancements in restorative dentistry and dental implants.
His passion for education would persist as time passed: writing a book on dental implants in 1991, teaching at the University of Texas Dental School and Baylor Dental School and lecturing at seminars across the country on cosmetic dentistry, oral reconstruction and communication.
Four years ago, Dr. Baird launched the Productive Dentist Academy, a company that provides dentists and their teams insight on how to expand productivity through improving business plans, execution, team building and development.
Not long after establishing the Productive Dentist Academy, it became necessary to hire another doctor to keep up with the growing demands of the dental practice and the business. Six years ago, Dr. Jeffrey Buske joined the Granbury Dental Center team.
"I love to see that Heartland can be a great fit for any dentist, that we’re not just a place with cookie-cutter offices. Affiliating with Heartland has allowed Drs. Baird and Buske to continue applying their knowhow and talents to best serve patients, but now they have added time to focus on their educational and business endeavors as well."
A 1997 Baylor University Dental School graduate, Dr. Buske also places a high value on education, having completed a myriad of residencies and training on topics including implants and pediatric facial development. Dr. Buske also contributes from the other side of the classroom in a teaching role at the Productive Dentist Academy’s seminars.
As enrollment in Dr. Baird’s quarterly seminars went up, the area surrounding Granbury was also growing rapidly. Granbury Dental Center continued to flourish as well, adding a second location. Facing an increased work load and an extending community to support, the doctors needed a solution. Since first visiting Heartland’s headquarters, Dr. Baird remained well informed about the company, continuing to be impressed with Heartland’s business model and proven success. Through this respect, he knew Heartland would provide the right long-term solution for him and his team.
"My plate was overflowing—juggling my responsibilities as a dentist, managing the practice, raising my daughters and pursuing other interests—but now life is less chaotic. I want to pace myself so I never have to quit, and Heartland’s contribution allows me to do that," he commented.
Joining with Heartland has definitely paid dividends. Since affiliating in October 2010, Granbury Dental Center has seen record production months. Additionally, the 22-member team has enjoyed being free of “management hassles.” Their timing couldn’t have been better. As the doctors and team at Granbury Dental Center began their transition to Heartland, another transition was taking place within Heartland’s corporate headquarters. Leadership for the Education Department was being assumed by none other than Meredith Fulton.
"Heartland is second to none in education. Ask any respected dentist and they’ll say the same thing—there is no one in the industry that compares to Heartland in terms of education."
Fulton, who holds her master’s degree in education, has a passion for empowering doctors and their teams to succeed. Like Dr. Baird, she believes continual education is a keystone of success and productivity. By implementing new ideas and technology while supplying the highest quality support, the Education Department will provide doctors with that next level of achievement— allowing them to further progress their expertise and offer optimal patient care.
In her new role, Fulton envisions a future of educational plans tailored to the varying needs of each Heartland doctor, office and team. "I love to see that Heartland can be a great fit for any dentist, that we’re not just a place with cookie-cutter offices. Affiliating with Heartland has allowed Drs. Baird and Buske to continue applying their know-how and talents to best serve patients, but now they have added time to focus on their educational and business endeavors as well," she said.
Fulton looks forward to offering education options to complement the unrivaled, state-of-the-art technology already in place in Heartland offices. In the future, training for clinical procedures, software and new technology could be available to doctors and team members online.
"Eventually, we plan to offer some courses for credit online as well. One thing we’re finding is that doctors love to be in their offices, so giving them options to do continuing education on their time, from anywhere, takes away so many obstacles," Fulton said.
She is also working with Heartland’s team of Clinical Directors to create a reference library of short webinars on topics ranging from crown preparation to leadership. She and the team foresee these being especially helpful for new doctors and those looking to expand their practices.
Heartland’s Educational Successes
- In 2010, Heartland offered CE for over 95 classes attended by 6,651 participants.
- Currently has more than 65 volunteer presenters teaching our core classes.
- Over 350 current Heartland doctors and teams have attended Bell Leadership.
- Based on Heartland’s current calendar, a doctor could attend a different CE course every month this year.
- Currently on pace for more than 150 classes in 2011.
"I’m excited we can offer so much training on such a wide variety of topics. Not only that, we have the latest technology to conduct training and feature world-renowned speakers to spur momentum and provide direction. The average doctor in a private practice doesn’t have access to this much continuing education; Heartland is truly in a league of its own in that aspect," Fulton said.
The future looks bright for this partnership. Granbury Dental Center recently added a new dentist and will break ground later this year for a new, more spacious facility. At Heartland’s headquarters, the Education Department is breaking ground of its own: doctors and their teams can expect radical changes resulting in more flexible, accessible and customized education. “Heartland is second to none in education. Ask any respected dentist, and they’ll say the same thing—there is no one in the industry that compares to Heartland in terms of education,” said Dr. Baird.
Progression through education—both Heartland and Dr. Baird are firmly committed to this goal and have separately implemented this as a personal and professional philosophy. Now that the two are united, the force is undeniable.
