A Weight Off Your Shoulders

For a dentist, even a successful practice can be a nightmare to manage single-handedly. When dividing your attention between patient care, managing your team, marketing your practice, billing and so on, stress and frustration are likely to follow. Just ask Dr. Stephen McLeod.

"For many years, I ran a successful practice in a small town and loved it. However, the management headaches were becoming too much to handle," said Dr. McLeod. "My team and I needed to make a change."

A Weight off Your Shoulders

Dr. McLeod graduated from the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2001. While building his own office, he worked elsewhere for about a year. Once his office was complete, he started practicing on his own. After about nine years of successfully running his practice, Dr. McLeod affiliated with Heartland Dental Care. In March 2011, he sought out HDC to solve his management dilemmas.

"Previously, I heard mention of Heartland Dental Care, but I didn’t know too many details. So I called and spoke with Justin Wendling at HDC to learn more about the company. After speaking with Justin, as well as a few other companies, I decided HDC was really the only option that fit my goals. Their business style was exactly what I was looking for,” said Dr. McLeod. “The transition process was seamless and quick. The Affiliation team did an excellent job of walking us through the steps and making sure both parties had everything we needed."

"I think a lot of new graduates want to be practice owners, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The lifestyle freedoms HDC provides, as well as the networking opportunities with other dentists, won’t be found anywhere else."

With HDC, Dr. McLeod’s practice, now Royal Oaks Dental Care, continues to flourish. Incorporating HDC’s practice improvement strategies has helped Dr. McLeod and his team function as an even stronger unit. "Our staff has become more team and goal oriented, which has improved our production and overall happiness," said Dr. McLeod. "We’ve always had a strong, committed team but our camaraderie has grown even stronger."

Now, Dr. McLeod has the support he needs to eliminate his management burdens and find balance between his personal and professional lives. "My personal life is a thousand percent better. When you’re a self-owner and you want to go on vacation for a week, you have nothing but headaches and worries. Now I can enjoy these fun times with my family knowing that there’s support back at the HDC Home Office," said Dr. McLeod. "I would advise anyone thinking about joining HDC to go for it. The dental industry’s not the same as it once was. Owning your own business is much tougher these days. I would never consider opening up another practice on my own. I think a lot of new graduates want to be practice owners, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. The lifestyle freedoms HDC provides, as well as the networking opportunities with other dentists, won’t be found anywhere else."
