A New Look for Doctor Leadership
New study clubs to provide personalized education opportunities for affiliated dentists
Over the years, Heartland Dental’s Dr. Leadership series has become a staple of the company’s ongoing commitment to furthering the knowledge and skills of affiliated dentists. Incorporating both clinical, leadership and business topics to benefit young dentists, the courses feature top speakers within the dental industry, as well as Heartland Dental leaders and clinical directors. With the courses, the instructors have sought to reduce the learning curve for new dentists, providing proven clinical techniques and business training often not taught in dental schools.
In the upcoming months, the Dr. Leadership series will receive a bit of a makeover. The courses will still focus on advancing the communication, leadership and clinical skills of young affiliated dentists. But instead of the traditionally large courses annually, the series will now be augmented by a number of regional "study clubs."
"An important part of Heartland Dental's culture has always been our close-knit, family mindset. As our company continues to grow, it's important to maintain a "bigger we get, the smaller we need to be" way of thinking. With the regional study clubs, we can offer more interactive, one-on-one education," said Dr. Samson Liu. "In the clubs, we seek to implement more actual training within dental offices, rather than just classroom-based training. As part of our family mentality, the study clubs will also be lead by Heartland Dental's own. It's our plan to roll out a mentor training series, in which leading affiliated dentists in different regions will be coached on how to best spearhead these study clubs."
In the dental industry, there are many organizations that support dentists in hosting or joining a study club, perhaps the most well known is the Seattle Study Club. Developed by Dr. Michael Cohen, this group consists of over 250 active dental specialists across the world, each with their own affiliated study clubs. "Both Dr. Cohen and these specialists are dedicated to the advancement of team treatment planning and total case management as the ultimate tool for achieving ideal comprehensive care. They have committed themselves to effective clinical management of their offices," explained Dr. Liu. "Their principles focus on creating interactive education experiences with hand-on participation, as well as learning from peers in structured, supportive environments."
The revamped Dr. Leadership study clubs are scheduled to roll out this fall, with plans to have 30 to 40 clubs established by 2015. Stay tuned to the fall issue of Smiling for more details on this exciting new opportunity.
