Discovering Hidden Gems
Heartland Dental-affiliated dentists and hygienists uncover new skills with Hygiene Diamonds.
The role dental hygienists play in dental offices is crucial. In many ways, they are the "front lines" of the office, promoting oral hygiene and helping patients prevent oral disease before it develops and spreads. With periodontal disease being such a prevalent issue, their role has become more important than ever. Recognizing this, Heartland Dental offers affiliated hygienists new opportunities to build upon their skills and unearth concepts they never knew existed. One such opportunity Heartland Dental recently discovered is Hygiene Diamonds.
Hygiene Diamonds consults with Heartland Dental's affiliated hygienists and dentists to help them transform their hygiene departments, implement new skills and enhance the overall experiences of their patients. The course offers training in a variety of areas, including incorporating new techniques and technology, developing effective patient relationships and customer service, maximizing organizational methods and emphasizing lifetime, comprehensive care.
"I found the experience to be extremely helpful; I look forward to applying the information I learned in my office," said Mackenzie Jacoby, a dental hygienist at Dental Care of Largo in Largo, Florida. "A wide variety of topics were covered, both clinical and communication focused. Wendy was also a very passionate and motivational speaker."
Wendy Briggs, RDH
Chief Executive Officer and President of Hygiene Diamonds
The initiative was started by Wendy Briggs, RDH, Chief Executive Officer and President of Hygiene Diamonds. With over 20 years of hygiene experience, Wendy offers simple steps to meet the everyday challenges dentists and hygienists face; steps that are easy to take and make a significant difference. "So often in dentistry, hygiene is practiced as a status quo, without recurrent advancement. But it doesn't have to be that way. So many opportunities exist for both dentists and hygienists; opportunities just waiting to be discovered," she explained. "We provide them the knowledge, tools and encouragement to make those discoveries."
In 2013, hundreds of Heartland Dental-affiliated dentists and team members took advantage of Hygiene Diamonds' coaching and mentorship. During the fall, they attended live Hygiene Diamonds events offered across the nation.
"No matter what your role in a dental office is, the event is beneficial for everyone. My office was already knowledgeable on the best ways to provide patient care, but we learned how to understand our patients even more," explained Cindy Henderson, Office Manager at Eastman Dental Associates in Eastman, Georgia. "Now we can apply new practices and efficiencies in patient retention, taking x-rays, caries risk assessment, sealants, whitening and more."
Grant Pinney, DMD
practicing dentist at Fairwater Dental Group in Orlando, Florida
"Some dentists may have reservations about taking the course or question the value of it, but they shouldn't. After participating, I learned many interesting concepts and takeaways my team can now incorporate," said Grant Pinney, DMD, practicing dentist at Fairwater Dental Group in Orlando, Florida. "My hygienists are now very motivated and excited to hit the ground running. It was a great, positive experience."
From hygienists to dentists, many of Heartland Dental's finest are now finding previously unknown skills with the knowledge and assistance of Hygiene Diamonds. The program has become another outstanding element of Heartland Dental's continuing education.
