Newer affiliated dentists get a head start at Heartland Dental's Dr. Leadership series.

One of the cornerstones of Heartland Dental's educational offerings, the annual Dr. Leadership series is offered to newly-affiliated dentists and new graduates with less than five years of experience. Broken into five parts, each series incorporates both clinical, leadership and business topics to benefit these young dentists. The courses feature top speakers within the dental industry, as well as Heartland Dental leaders and clinical directors. With the courses, the instructors seek to reduce the learning curve for new dentists from the industry standard of 10 years to less than two years, providing proven clinical techniques and business training often not taught in dental schools.

"It was great to learn alongside other affiliated dentists in the same career stage with the same goals as I have," said Jade DeSmidt, DDS, practicing dentist at Valley Park Dental Care in Valley Park, Missouri. "We have access to high-level education that encompasses so many critical aspects of dentistry and leading your team. You won't find that anywhere but Heartland Dental."

In 2013, the five courses were offered from August through December, covering a wide variety of topics such as direct and indirect restorations, endodontics, orthodontics, doctor/hygiene partnership, oral surgery, the laws of leadership, failing forward, the business of dentistry, scheduling for efficiency and more. Featured speakers included Dr. Steven Poss, Dr. Jay Reznik and Heartland Dental clinical directors.

"In dental school, I learned how to be a great dentist clinically. But learning the best methods of communication and how to effectively lead my team wasn't really emphasized in the curriculum," explained Christopher Webb, DMD, practicing dentist at Family Dental Care of East Peoria in East Peoria, Illinois. "Dr. Leadership offers young dentists a chance to expand upon their skills in all of those areas in one valuable series. I built upon my clinical knowledge, and now have a better understanding of the business side of dentistry as well."

In December, the 2013 series came to a close with the Excellence in Leadership course. Taking place during the annual Doctor Holiday Party weekend, the course featured a number of prominent speakers, including Coach Lou Holtz, who shared his game plan for success to help affiliated dentists lead and propel their teams to mastery. In addition, Fred Joyal, one of the founders of 1-800-Dentist, spoke about the ever-increasing need for executing the right dental office marketing strategy, and ex-FBI agent, Joe Navarro, spoke on reading body language to help dentists recognize when patients are uncomfortable or unsure about treatment.

Heartland Dental clinical directors and leaders also spoke, including, Chief Executive Officer at Heartland Dental, Dr. Rick Workman, President and Chief Operations Officer at Heartland Dental, Patrick Bauer, Dr. Samson Liu, Dr. Eric Smith and Dr. Mark Hodge.
